Orlando, FL — July 3, 2015 — Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the arthritic conditions that makes many patients suffer. On the other hand, diabetes, which is a different disease, has ways of reducing a sufferer’s quality of life. Albeit the two conditions are different, there seems to be a connection between the two.

A Canadian study suggests that rheumatoid arthritis can potentially increase diabetes risk by 50 percent. This is something that many RA patients are worried about since diabetes can also cause some comorbidities. Those who suffer from the two conditions are more susceptible to developing more diseases and experiencing a reduced quality of life.

According to the study published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, individuals who suffer from autoimmune forms of arthritis, such as psoriatic arthritis or rheumatic arthritis, are 50 percent more susceptible to diabetes.

Researchers reviewed the medical records between 1996 and 2006 in the British Columbia database. They compared the data of 40,346 patients with psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis, 48,718 rheumatoid arthritis patients  and 442,033 patients without rheumatic diseases. The purpose of the study was to determine the difference of the risk they are susceptible to in developing diabetes. Patients who were given a prescription for a diabetic medication or who received a diabetes diagnosis were classified as diabetics.

“It was found that the relative diabetes risk increased by 50 percent in patients who suffered from psoriatic arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis over those who did not suffer from the diseases,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.

Daniel Solomon, M.D., study author from the Brigham Women’s Hospital’s Division of Rheumatology, stated that the risk in developing diabetes can increase with age as well as the body mass index or BMI. Being at an increased risk should motivate patients to eliminate excess pounds and maintain a healthy weight. According to Dr. Solomon, it can be that the inflammation in RA is linked to insulin resistance, which happens when the body fails to process insulin properly.

It is imperative that rheumatoid arthritis patients practice a healthy diet and lifestyle. They should become slim and physically active to reduce their risk of diabetes and other conditions. Pain often causes sufferers to become physically inactive, and this is why many of them resort to a variety of treatments to achieve pain relief and stay mobile. Natural alternatives, such as curcumin supplements, are considered to be one of the most popular pain relief treatment options available today (http://amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI/).
