Orlando, FL — September 08, 2016 — Curcumin is a phytochemical believed to be effective in fighting a range of medical conditions. As a matter of fact, there are many people nowadays who use curcumin supplements to potentially increase their protection against a range of conditions.

A study finds that curcumin may be helpful in reducing heart enlargement and potentially preventing heart failure. Curcumin may be found in the ancient spice called turmeric. This spice is a popular kitchen ingredient and is typically used for a range of dishes and beverages.

According to the researchers at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre of the Toronto General Hospital, consuming curcumin may dramatically reduce the risk of developing heart failure.

The article entitled “Curcumin prevents and reverses murine cardiac hypertrophy”, was published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.  The researchers reveal that the herb was fed to mouse models with enlarged hearts or hypertrophy.  They further reveal that the phytochemical may not just prevent but also reverse hypertrophy. It may also help to regain heart function and decrease scar formation.

In various Eastern cultures, the properties of turmeric have been widely known for some time and may were even considered to be medicinal. This spice has even been used in traditional Indian and Chinese medicine to help reduce scar formation. For instance, it is often utilized as an at-home alternative for cuts and bruises to possibly avoid a bad scar.

It is believed that curcumin works in the cell nucleus directly, which may prevent irregular chromosome unraveling during stress. It may also prevent the production of abnormal proteins.  According to Dr. Peter Liu, a cardiologist in the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, curcumin may have an ability to shut off a major switch at the chromosome source where scarring and enlargement genes are turned on.

Dr. Liu is also the Scientific Director at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research — Institute of Circulatory and Respiratory Health. He also holds the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Polo Chair Professor in Medicine and Physiology at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Liu also added that since curcumin is inexpensive, potentially effective, and widely available, and it may even be an excellent means of preventing heart failure.

Taking preventive measures such as exercising regularly and eating healthy foods are among the best ways to reduce one’s risk of heart conditions. Taking curcumin supplements may also be helpful, especially to individuals who are susceptible to the condition.

Most of the more notable curcumin supplements available nowadays contain a potential bioavailability-enhancing ingredient called piperine, which is a black pepper extract.
