Orlando, FL — June 19, 2015 — Hip osteoarthritis patients often suffer from movement difficulty and pain. Physicians normally prescribe physical therapy to help patients improve their overall condition. However, it seems that this treatment option is gaining the attention of more researchers, especially in terms of its effects on hip osteoarthritis.

A study investigates the efficacy of PT regimens for hip osteoarthritis patients. This is a conservative therapy that usually includes a combination of therapeutic exercises, massage, manual therapy and education under the supervision of a trained physical therapist.

“Physical therapy offers minimal risk and it is often covered by insurance plans. Although the combination of exercise and manual therapy has been known to be effective for hip osteoarthritis, it has not been known how they work individually,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.

Kim L. Bennell, PhD, University of Melbourne’s director of the Centre for Health, Exercise and Sports Medicine, and a team of researchers have conducted a study to determine the efficacy of physical therapy. It was found that patients who underwent a physical therapy program have experienced reduction in function and pain. However, individuals in the placebo group also experienced some improvements. The findings of this study were published in the JAMA, or The Journal of the American Medical Association.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, there are around 25 percent of individuals who are susceptible to hip arthritis in the United States. Since it has not been established yet what the best therapy is to reverse cartilage wear and tear, treatments are focused on the improvement of pain and the prevention of joint replacement.

The American College of Rheumatology, or ACR, Osteoarthritis Research Society International, or OARSI, and other professional organizations and healthcare providers recommend daily exercise such as swimming and walking to achieve relief from symptoms as well as maintain mobility. There are also other organizations that recommend physical therapy.

Dr. Bennell and her team monitored 102 individuals who were 50 years and older and suffering from moderate osteoarthritis-related hip pain for nine months. It was found that patients who belonged to the physical therapy group experienced improvements. However, it is also important to note that they did not do better than those in the placebo group. As a matter of fact, the improvement in the individuals in the placebo treatment was slightly better.

There are many known pain relief remedies used by individuals who are suffering from hip osteoarthritis. In addition to drugs, many sufferers also use natural alternatives such as glucosamine supplements (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4/).
