26, November 2014: Big news in the engagement ring world has been revealed by various media publications and states that a couple’s love and their chances of having a lasting relationship is negatively correlated with the size of their engagement ring.

It has recently been proven in a study by Emory University that bigger and more ornate rings that are likely to be less unusual engagement rings and more ‘high street’, led to higher divorce rates. The study, carried out by two professors, analysed data from 3000 couples who were either currently married or once-married, and found that the length of marriage was indirectly related to the amount of money spent on their engagement ring. In fact, men who spent between £1244 and £2488 on engagement rings were more likely to divorce than those spending between £300 and £1200.

This news certainly sparked interest in the F&L Designer Guides community, where it is firmly believed that, as once said by De Beers, “A diamond is forever”, regardless of its size! L, from F&L said she believed firmly that this media hype didn’t give the whole picture and the fact that less unusual engagement rings with bigger stones led to higher divorce rates could be attributed to a number of factors, including the fact that spending more on a ring could equal more debt that could then cause pressure on a relationship. Another possible explanation is that bigger rings are bought purely for status rather than as a reflection of the real love and feeling the couple have for each other.

F, the other founder of F&L Designer Guides says that he thinks that the thought and care that go into unique and unusual engagement rings are more important than ring size, and he believes wholeheartedly that this is why the idea of bespoke design is making its mark on the engagement ring world. Surely, unusual engagement rings designed specifically for individual couples that take the time to source a ring that reflects their tastes, personalities and unique love stories are much more of an indicator of whether a marriage will stand the test of time? You would like to think so, wouldn’t you?

This, however, has yet to be put to the test, but in the meantime the F&L team stand by their ethos that bespoke is best. Designed to accommodate all budgets, value becomes irrelevant when you have such a special piece of timeless jewellery.
