Are you stubborn? I mean, are you the kind of person who will keep on doing the same thing even when you know for a fact that you are not getting results? I asked this question because there are business executives who keep on doing the same things even though they are not achieving the results they set forth to achieve in the first place. These kinds of executives are those that are afraid to risk. Although their efforts are not getting the results they want, they still do it for the simple reason that they are afraid to try something new for fear of failing even more.

If you think you are this type of person, well, you better change; otherwise, you would not go anywhere far from where you are currently right now. If you want to be a market leader, then you have to do something drastic to achieve your end results. After reading this article, pause for a while and then do whatever you need to do to change what has not been working for you.

Change, it is argued, is the only permanent thing in this world. As such, there is nothing that cannot change. In fact, change is what everybody needs in order to alter the course of events in oneâ€â„¢s life. This is especially true for marketers and those who are in sales. If you donâ€â„¢t change and just keep on doing the same thing, youâ€â„¢re just going to have the same results over and over again. If you are satisfied with the results then continuously do the same things. But if you want to get more, then do something drastic.

So what should you do to affect change? First, you have to change even before you fail. The point is do not let yourself fail if you know all along that there is something wrong with your strategy. This is the common mistake of marketing executives and business owners– they change only when they see themselves failing in their endeavors. The question now is why you have to wait to fail when you can do something well before you see yourself crashing. Needless to say, do something about it before it is too late.

This is precisely what you should not do when youâ€â„¢re in sales. Do not change only when you are in pain or in a quandary before you make yourself alter your plans. You might not be able to do anything because youâ€â„¢re in so much pain to even move a small bit.

Take the time and effort to look at your marketing strategy last year. Is your business card printing not giving you the ROIs you expect? Or are your business cards not getting the right clients to your business? The bottom line is to not do the same things that failed you last year. Think about the pain and money your marketing collateral caused you. Think about the lost sales and opportunities, the missed chances that highlight your failure with your marketing campaign. Then make that small step to change for the better.

Never stick with strategies that did not work the first time. Reformulate and re-strategize. This is to suggest that if your business cards did not get the rave it so rightfully deserve, then by all means, go back to the drawing board and reformulate the design. Never insist on doing the same thing if it does not yield the results you want. Whatever you do, just always remember to do something and make sure that you change what youâ€â„¢ve been doing for the longest time for the better.

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates recently criticized the US military for not doing enough to support soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, singling out the Air Force for adapting too slowly to the new enemies on those battlefields. He blamed military leaders who are “stuck in old ways of doing business“. That may sound strange to hear coming from a senior government official who knows full well that the military is steeped in the tradition of command and control leadership that creates a top-down management style and fosters orderliness and predictability, rather than innovation and adaptability.Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates recently criticized the US military for not doing enough to support soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, singling out the Air Force for adapting too slowly to the new enemies on those battlefields. He blamed military leaders who are “stuck in old ways of doing business“. That may sound strange to hear coming from a senior government official who knows full well that the military is steeped in the tradition of command and control leadership that creates a top-down management style and fosters orderliness and predictability, rather than innovation and adaptability.

But in a world of chaos and ever changing conditions, Mr. Gates realizes that the ability to change and adapt is key to military success: What worked well in the past may now be an outmoded and ineffective approach.

Mr. Gates is pointing out a truism that US business organizations of all types and sizes have witnessed and/or experienced during the past 75 plus years: Unadaptive organizations underperform and/or fail in the long run. Companies like Sears & Roebuck, K-Mart, Pam Am, Howard Johnsons, Armour & Company, Westinghouse Electric are examples of businesses which were once at the top of their industrial sectors only to be toppled by competitors who looked into the future, adapted and out performed them. And the way their competitors did it was with adaptive leaders, not top-down managers.

So what\'s the difference between the two?

Consider top-down managers first. These managers, for the most part, are predominantly linear thinkers. Linear thinkers are rational, logical and analytical. They are mainly concerned with the present, not the future. They tend to stick with things that have worked well in the past as opposed to experimenting with the unfamiliar.

They are very organized individuals who value orderliness and predictability. They favor rules and procedures to ensure that orders from the top are followed through to the lowest level. Their mentality is that managers think, workers do (as they are told)“¦.an idea generated by the father of management science, Frederick W. Taylor during the early 20th century. This approach worked fine back then, during the early US industrial economy. But today, things are quite different. We are now living and working in a knowledge economy.

If you have ever worked for one of these authoritative managers, you know first hand how autocratic and controlling they can be. Gather a group of these linear thinkers and place them at the top, running the organization, and guess what you get? A very rigid top-down organization that does everything by the rules, creating a bureaucracy that stifles innovation and creativity making it short-sighted, inflexible and unadaptive.

Enlightened, adaptive leaders are much different from top-down managers. They tend to be more non-linear in their thinking. These leaders are more intuitive, have greater insight, and are more creative. Being more conceptual, the see the “big picture“, are futuristic oriented, possess holistic insight and emotional intelligence.

They have greater spontaneity and flexibility“”a balanced integration of rational analytical and unconventional imaginative processes. They have the ability to take a new perspective to an old complex problem and reassemble interrelated parts of the problem in novel and unusual ways leading to a viable solution. They are much better at coping with the non linear complex nature of the competitive context of our global business environment.

One would think that most of these adaptive leaders head up the newer hi-tech companies like Apple, Google, Nintendo, Microsoft and Amazon.com. But if you look at the recent list of the top 25 innovative companies recently compiled by BusinessWeek (4/28/2008), you may be surprised to find more traditional companies such as General Electric, Toyota Motor, Hewlett Packard, Wal-Mart, and Proctor & Gamble included on the list with the newer hi-tech companies. These more traditional companies have adaptive leaders who are building cultures that value creative people in good times and bad.

The good news is that managers can change and become more adaptive leaders just as traditional companies can become more innovative. As a corporate executive leadership coach, I have worked with hundreds of managers and executives for the past 20 years and I have witnessed a transformation of many individuals who have changed from top-down managers to adaptive leaders. All thinking and behavior can be changed“¦it is called learning. Through assessment, self awareness, action learning, and coaching, managers can become more effective and adaptive leaders.

In essence, my experience, research and observations have led me to conclude that the assertion, “Leaders are born, not made,“ is a myth.

First of all, I believe that it’s very important to have written goals. You must know what you want to achieve specifically. You need a “map“ for your life. Just like when traveling on vacation.

It is also important to look at your goals every day. You should visualize your goals in your head daily. Act as though you already achieved your goals. Live daily with the attitude of gratitude.

It is important, that as you visualize your goals you get excited, and more excited each time you visualize your goals.

Another thing of importance is writing your main goals down fifteen times each daily. That should help embed your goals deep down into your subconscious mind. Helping you to also believe in yourself more.

Remember, to be inspired, I believe you should have big goals. Of whatevever good you choose.

Find needs, and fulfill them.

Once you know where you are headed, you must persevere. Keep on keeping on. Like how a stamp stays on the envelope all the way to its destination.

I believe it’s also important to be charitable. Like the saying goes “people take from the takers, and give to the givers.“

Love the people that you serve. Really care about them. People are more willing to help you if you make them feel important, and respected. Be sincere, and tell people thank you when they help you.

Model successful people. Learn from successful people, that are doing what you want to do.

It’s also important to keep a positive mental attitude. I believe success is 99.9% attitude.

Try to stay away from negative thinking, complaining people. Circulate yourself around positive, upbeat kind of people. Because one increases what one thinks about most.

One very strange, but effective technique in helping stay positive, is get a large elastic band. Put it on your wrist. Of course make sure its loose enough so it doesn\'t cut the blood pressure off on your wrist. Do this for a whole month. Whenever you think negatively, pull the elastic band, and snap it on your wrist. I\'ve learned this before, and have applied it, and it is effective for me.

Of course, it’s important to take action. Discipline yourself to take massive action.

Also believe in yourself. Say to yourself daily “I can, I can, I can.“ As you visualize your goals in your mind.

Write to do lists every night before you go to bed. Write down all the important things you need to accomplish for the next day. Write them in order of most importantance, to the least important. Then cross them off as you get them done.

I believe it’s important to read autobiographies, and biographies of successful people, because reading them can help inspire as well as teach.

One way of helping to remember what you learn, is simply teach others what you learn.

It’s also been said, “communication is the secret to success.“ I believe it’s important to study on how to negotiate, and how to influence people. Libraries have many good books to further our education.

These are some of the basics, that I believe, help lead us to achieving more. I hope these tips are helpful to you.

Small thinking creates more dissatisfaction in life than any other single factor. People, by the nature, want to be successful. The human spirit yearns to attain great things. Unfortunately, the general population settles for less than they are capable of. Thoreau summed it up when he said that most people live a life of quiet desperation. The inner desire for all that life offers is typically in conflict with the outer results being achieved.

What is your true greatness Determining this begins with thinking much bigger than you are presently conditioned. In spite of what society teaches, you can have it all. People tend to think in terms of surviving rather than thriving. Focus on your survival and that is what you get. Shift your thinking to thriving in each area of your life and it will be instantly take on new meaning.

Are you trying to leap over the Grand Canyon or a small ravine Both are wrought with challenges that could lead to failure. So why not go for the gusto If you do not succeed at a particular action, you received a valuable lesson. The bigger the undertaking, the more valuable the lesson.

Small thinking leads to small results. Choose any area of life and begin to think of bigger results. Immediately things change in a way previously unimagined. Instead of trying to figure ways to earn some extra money, concentrate doubling or tripling your income. Go after that goal with all the vigor you can muster. Also, have terms such as best, highest, and greatest in your regular thought process.

All great achievement is preceded by big thinking. It begins with the thought, followed by the action, and then the result. However, most people cannot begin to implement this mindset because of selfworth issues. Poor self esteem tells us that we are crazy to think about these things. It questions our intelligence, work ethic, and abilities. The conclusion is that we cannot do it so we need to settle for what we can get. Of course, the spirit within us cries out against this but fear wins out in the end.

The conditioning of our mind was influenced by the people around us growing up. Although they loved us dearly, their insecurities and feelings of inferiority were transferred over to us. Undo this be realizing that you are worthy of all the greatness that life has to offer. Think on the grandest scale to create a grand life.

Many have tried to change their lives by changing their actions. While actions are important for success, they will not induce meaningful change. If the mind limits the ability to create a fantastic life, all the action in the world will go to waste. All of our success is first determined by our thinking. The more room that we allow for our imagination to explore, the greater the potential.

Your life will begin to take on new meaning as your thinking expands. Seek out the different areas where you can begin this process today. Believe that you are capable of creating the magical life that so many crave. Remove the self imposed limits to accelerate your growth

We are being judged by a new yardstick not just how smart we are, or by our training and expertise, but also how well we handle ourselves and each other Daniel Goleman, Working with Emotional Intelligence

Being in control of your emotions puts you in charge of your destiny and increases the trust and respect you earn from others. Mastering emotional control gives you power when you lose it, you lose your power too.

Whether we are conscious of it or not, we decide every instant how to respond to the events of life, whether it is an insult hurled our way, a rude gesture, or an embroiling conflict. While other people or situations may aggravate, irritate, instigate, frustrate, disappoint or dishearten us, ultimately we choose what to feel and how to respond. We are completely in charge of our emotional responses. No one makes us feel anything we do it ourselves. It is our own thoughts that make us cross or us calm and centered.

When we feed ourselves anger rousing thoughts, it activates a feedback loop, circulating more anger all dependent on what we tell ourselves. If you think or say, He is acting like an idiot He makes me so angry your body will respond to your verbal cues and kick the bodys defense mechanisms into high gear. Our thoughts and feelings create mental and emotional states which influence how we related to situations and people in them.

Our anger buttons might go on alert when a certain word is spoken, a particular tone of voice is used, or an eyebrow is raised in displeasure. Countless things activate anger based on how we believe others should be thinking, behaving or feeling.

When people behave in ways that conflict with what we want, need or value our anger heats up.

Anger is not a bad emotion, however it produces bad feelings if not effectively managed. It leaves behind a trail of bitter feelings with powerfully destructive consequences, such as fueling hostility, resentment, and a desire for revenge.

Anger is a natural human emotion that is experienced by everyone it can be safely expressed without being aggressive or obnoxious

Avoid heated discussions. When we feel pressured, stressed or threatened, effective communication is often compromised. We may talk faster, speak at a higher frequency, or interrupt or rattle on as a means of dominating the conversation.

We all think the enemy is somewhere out there, that some person, force or nation is out to harm us in some way. Rather than live a life focused upon what they want, many people\'s lives center around protecting themselves from their enemies, devising strategies to beat them. However, enemies consume time, attention, resources, well-being and happiness in life itself. And the odd thing about enemies is that even when we defeat one, ten more seem to immediately appear. Even when they think they are winning over their enemies, they are losing a life of freedom, health and good will.

How To Get Rid Of Enemies Easily

The smartest, simplest and easiest way to get rid of your enemy is to turn him/her into a friend. It actually takes only a moment to do this. Stop for a moment and ask yourself, who decided this person or situation is my enemy? You did. Now you can turn that decision around and decide the person is a friend. You can decide to become a friend to that person, (or to that situation or condition), to stop fighting and respond with kindness and care. You can choose to see other aspects of that person, which are not in opposition to you. Once you step out of the dance they are doing, how can they hurt you?

The True Enemy In Your Life

The next step would be to take a deep breath and realize where the true enemy is hiding. What exactly is it that is keeping you in constant turmoil? This is the moment to realize that your true enemy is within. It is your very own hatred, anger, fear and upset. The true enemy is the propensity we have for projecting our anger and fear outside into the world, for pinning it on people and situations and then battling with them. It is extremely disempowering to project your darkness upon someone else. It gives the other person power over you. Until we stop this, more and more enemies will keep appearing. Ultimately, they are the creations of our own mind and heart.

Below are some steps to take, to live a life free of enemies. Try them and see how easy and enjoyable they really are.

Step 1: Make Friends With Your Enemy

Allow yourself a moment of willingness to consider the possibility that your enemy wants the same things in life and is, most likely, just as afraid of you as you are of them.

A)Say to yourself - "Like me, my enemy wants to be happy and safe. Like me, me, my enemy has suffered and wants to be free of pain. Like me, my enemy is lonely. Like me, my enemy will one day face loss and death."

Step 2: Who Is Your Enemy

A) Make a list of those people (or situations) you feel are your enemies.(You may be astonished to note that even those you love are fearful to you).

B) Write down three valuable qualities this enemy has.

C) Write down three ways you have gained from knowing them.

D)Write down what is needed for you to see them as a friend.

Step 3: Reclaiming Your Power.

A) Upon whom have you projected most negativity?

B) What about this person is so unacceptable?

C) Can you see these qualities in yourself as well?

D) For just a moment, can you accept these qualities in yourself? (This doesn\'t mean act upon them, just accept them for what they are now).

Step 4: Turn It Around

A) Offer your enemy the gift of respect.

B) Offer your enemy the gift of really listening and knowing them.

C) Stop judging your enemy. Let them be who they are.

D) Give your enemy what they want and need. Just one time.

E) Do it again now.

F) Notice how wonderful it feels.

G) Take time to notice how it feels to live in a world of friends?

Although there is no antidote to stressful commuting, there are lots of ways to shoo off the energy vulture. Here is how to thrive while you drive.

1. Prepare in advance

One of the best ways to lessen the strain of road rage is to prepare everything the night before. Clothes, documents, attache cases, and even packed lunches should be set the day before to avoid the morning rush. With everything champing at the bit, you would save plenty of time to do your morning routines, devour a good breakfast and enjoy special moments with the family. Best of all, you can dash out the highway free of traffic congestion.

2. Sleep well and wake up early

A good night\'s sleep rejuvenates the body. Make it a habit to have enough sleep and to rise early. If you are already stressed out the day before, an incomplete repose takes over cumulative stress effects into your life at work and at home. Your frustration levels at work eventually rises, your brainpower falters, and your mood at home sours. You have no energy left for enjoying life.

3. Juggle your work hours

Why pack the freeways with all the other "9-to-5"-ers when you can try a ten-to-six or an eight-to-four shift? Depending on your company\'s work policy, try to check out other shifts that fit your lifestyle. Choose one that would help you get rid of energy-depleting stress and allow you to lighten your highway woes.

4. Share your ride

It may be a hassle to coordinate your arrival and departure with another person or two, but carpooling is worth it. Studies show that ridesharing lowers commuter stress significantly. With carpooling, there is less air and noise pollution, less traffic congestion, and you can relax more while someone else does the driving.

5. "Cocoon" in your car

Instead of getting worked up when traffic is at a standstill, utilize your time wisely. Listen to the radio or pop in some music tapes to take your mind off the stop-and-go driving and traffic tie-ups. If you like to read but just cannot have time to flip pages of a book, check out books on cassette. Many libraries have full-length books on tape as well as abridged versions. You can even learn a new language or do some car exercises like shoulder rolls, neck extensions and tummy tucks to help you stay awake and relax.

6. Pillow your back and squirm

When you are standing, the lumbar area of your spine (the lower portion) normally curves inward, toward your abdomen. However, when you are sitting, it tends to slump outward squeezing your spinal disks and putting stress on them. Sometimes, it helps to support your back by tucking a rolled towel or a pillow in that lumbar section. In cases of longer drives, since sitting in one position for longer than 15 minutes gradually stiffens you even with a back pillow, make necessary adjustments for a comfy ride. For instance, you can try putting most of your weight on one buttock and then the other. Then, shift the position of your seat or your buttocks slightly. You may even try sliding down in your seat and sit up again for fun.

7. Work out after work

Since the evening rush is worse than the morning rush because of the compounded fatigue from the workday, it is best to wait out the traffic. Work out at a gym near your office or take meditation classes to relieve your stress. If you plan to go to dinner, see a movie or go shopping, try to do these things near work, delaying your departure enough to miss the maddening rush.

8. Give yourself a break

It may be a good idea to give yourself some days off from work. Many companies today offer compressed working hours or longer working days to give way to work-free days for you to unwind.

9. Move your office

If your job is a long drive ahead every day, inquire at work if the company would allow you to work at home some days of the week or if you can work near your place. An alternative work schedule would make you feel less tense and in control thereby reducing stress.

10. Occasionally change your routine

An occasional change of commuting habits may be advisable too. Try walking or bicycling sometimes for a change. There is nothing like a good walk to ease tension especially when it means you do not have to get in your car and fight rush hour traffic.

By lessening the stress of getting to work, you are conserving enormous amounts of energy that may be lost over stressful commuting. It does not only leave you a lot more energy to do your job and become more productive but it also makes you feel good and gives you a good reason to always start your day right.

Is acne stress related?

Stress - Since your skin in your largest organ, how you live can sure influence how healthy your skin is. And stress, not necessarily "bad" stress, but rather certain external and internal stressors, factor into this health equation. So let us look at how to handle these stressors with regards to acne prevention.

External Stressors - A goal of acne prevention would be to keep your skin pores clear from clogging and becoming infected and irritated, resulting in blemishes and inflammation. So you need to look at your external environment throughout the day for factors that could trigger skin pore clogging. Here are some examples of what to look for: grease, oils and sun, like being around open fryers in kitchen areas, or around machine oil and grease in workshops or factories, or out in the sun all day on a construction jobsite. Too much oil, grease or sun on the skin can clog pores and trigger acne and other skin irritations.

Minimize contact by wearing long sleeves and other protective wear and gear and discussing further options with your dermatologist or healthcare provider. With regards to being out in the sun, note that a small amount of sun each day can be fine and healthy. However, extended periods can trigger the sebaceous glands to create more oil as your skin dries out. At the same time, the dried out skin needs to be cast off or shed at a faster rate than normal. The resulting extra oils and dead skin make a wonderful environment for pore clogging. So here, too, use protective clothing for outdoor activities and apply sunscreen; oil-free products are best for acne-prone people, and those with a minimum protection of SPF 15 and both UVA and UVB protection.

Internal Stressors - Internal stressors like anxiety, fear, low self-esteem, depression and a variety of other internalized emotions, can trigger chemical reactions inside your body that can result in acne flare-ups and other skin irritations. What happens is that these emotions can set your adrenal glands to work creating more cortisol, the substance that in turn causes your sebaceous glands to produce increased amounts of sebum oil, excessive amounts of which can be blocked in pores. Same old story: extra oil + extra dead skin cells = blocked pores, triggering acne flare-ups. With internal stressors, though, the results are usually "inflamed papules" or small, solid inflammations (or skin elevations that do not contain pus), instead of whiteheads or blackheads.

To combat internal stressors and prevent acne problems, here are some suggestions.

Get plenty of rest and sleep a recommended average of eight hours per night. Try to maintain regular hours each day, regardless of which shift your work.

Some say to focus on reducing SWAT: reduce your stress, worry, anxiety and tension, so journal a little each day mentioning any "SWAT" stressors you have felt. And focus on those that may seem overwhelming or to be taking too long to "end," seeking help from others or other resources as needed for stress management Check with your dietician or healthcare provider to establish and follow a regular well-balanced dietary and exercise plan of action to keep your body healthy on the inside and outside. Keep a check list of "Things that Calm You" handy for stressful times, like reading a book, resting, listening to music, taking a walk, going out for an ice cream cone, etc.
