28 August, 2014: Europe, the most popular overall destination for river cruises, recently benefitted from an added bit of publicity, as major US news outlet USA Today featured an article on website, based precisely on that topic.

The write-up, the assumed purpose of which would have been to popularize barge cruises among the US audience, gives an overview of what the type of holiday offered by top UK barging company European Waterways consists of, before going over some of the most popular destinations for an European river cruise.

Unsurprisingly, most of the destinations included in the article are located in France, a country that continues to hold the mantle for most popular. There are, however, plenty of other interesting destinations in Europe for this type of holiday, as European Waterways’ selection of destinations acknowledges. The article makes reference to several of them, including Italy, Britain, Ireland, Germany and Luxembourg.

However, there is no denying the French locations all but monopolise the list drawn up by USA Today. No less than six regions are featured in the round up of worthwhile destinations for a barge holiday, which amounts to roughly half the total number of entries on the list. The French destinations recommended by the American news source in the write up are the Canal du Midi, Champagne, Provence, the Upper Loire region, and the Alsace-Lorraine area.

Aside from explaining the concept of barge cruises, the publication in question also recommends a few companies through which potentially interested parties may book this type of holiday. Here, the presence of the UK’s European Waterways is particularly noteworthy, and indicative of the prominent role the company has achieved in the international market.

River cruises have grown exponentially in popularity over the past few years, arguably rivalling their seafaring counterparts in popularity. Europeans have been particularly receptive to this type of holiday, hence the presence of companies such as European Waterways, but its appeal has been spreading to other parts of the world — most recently, as this article demonstrates, the United States.
