Staggeringly, an unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle can reduce a person’s lifespan by up to 23 years - action is needed now!

June 22, 2016 — Recent reports indicate that an unhealthy lifestyle can take up to 23 years off a person’s lifespan.  This cannot be ignored, especially when simply tweaks can and will make such a difference to this outcome.

The study, carried out over a 50 year span by the Department of Public Health and Primary Care at the University of Cambridge, shows that people develop largely preventable conditions such as heart disease, stroke and type two diabetes and as a result are cutting their life short by decades.  The good news is that it is estimated that around 80% of cases could be prevented by keeping weight under control, exercising more, eating a healthy diet and cutting down excessive smoking and drinking.

Sarah Knapton, Science Editor of the Daily Telegraph, reported that these statistics show that a man in his 40s, suffering from all three conditions reduces life by 23 years. It means that a 40-year-old's life expectancy would drop from 78 to just 55. Likewise, someone in their 60s could lose 15 years, meaning a 60-year-old man might have just three years of life left.

Scary stuff indeed, and the time to make that change to a new approach is now, but how can people help themselves.

Nigel Piper, spokesperson for the Fitness and Wellbeing company SmartChoice Fitness comments, ‘The benefits of being more active in the fresh air are plentiful and fairly obviously, but there are many other benefits that are overlooked.  Getting out in the fresh air and exercising can help depression, fatigue, stress and will boost a person’s confidence by giving them belief in themselves.  These are feelings that can often overwhelm anyone who wishes to make a change but are disillusioned in doing so’.

‘We want to encourage everyone and make even the most sceptical people believe that lifestyle tweaks have major impact!  We now have walking and running couch to 5k guides on our website along with advice on hydration, sleep and a new section on the benefits of aromatherapy too.’ continues Nigel ‘Two major lifestyle changes, which are accessible to virtually all, are drinking more water every day and getting daily exercise.  We have just launched a deal which is when you buy our Fruit Infuser Water Bottle for £12.49 you can get one of our Smart Belts for just £5 (usual price £10.97).’
