A former official in charge of inspecting the work of North Virginia plumbers and mechanics has just been elected vice-president of the International Code Council board of directors.

Guy Tomberlin, who manages the building-permit section of the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services and serves as technical advisor for coding agencies in the area, stated that the opportunity to participate in an organisation such as the Code Council was in line with his county’s plans of gaining international exposure. He went on to declare himself honoured by what he considers to be a privilege, and to promise a serious commitment to his new position.

Tomberlin certainly brings experience to the position, having been active in code enforcement as a certified inspector since 1985. Aside from the role he currently detains in the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, he has served as the president of the Virginia Building and Code Officials Associations, as well as of the Virginia Plumbing and Mechanical Inspectors Association, which regulates the work of North Virginia plumbers. Both associations seek to raise public awareness of building code-related matters and educate trade professionals on the various standards and practices involved with building contracts.

The International Code Council itself undertakes the same type of function, but expanded to an international setting. The US-based ICC is the main entity responsible for developing codes and standards for state and government building projects, in order to ensure the resulting homes and buildings are resilient and adhere to safety standards. The organisation also allows stakeholders and other US jurisdictions to chip in on the code-writing process, often taking ideas and suggestions from these individuals or institutions and applying them to their standards and practices documents. These documents are then used as models from which to build each state or government’s own building safety code.
