In a recent interview with leading Irish periodical the Irish Independent, local Michelin-rated chef Tom Kerridge considered a holiday to Venice to have ranked among the most memorable of his life.

A frequent traveller, the gourmet cook was interviewed for the Independent’s website, and quizzed on a number of preferences relating to travel and vacation destinations — one of which was the inevitable query about favourite destination. Although Kerridge said the small Greek island of Agistri had been his best holiday — mostly for the sentimental meaning it has to the chef and his wife — he would later go on to add his holiday to Venice and a vacation in Florence to his personal list. On the flipside, the uncomfortably cramped ten-hour flight to Kenya was considered by the Michelin chef to have been his worst travel-related moment.

Also on the course of this exchange with an Irish Independent travel writer, Kerridge admitted that he let his wife book the couple’s holidays, as she tended to go for relaxing breaks. The chef revealed that his preference lies in city breaks, where he enjoys getting lost in the architecture and gastronomy, but conceded that these are not the best for his physical and mental well being, explaining the deference to his better half. He also called his wife, Beth, the ‘ideal travel companion’, as he said she helped him broaden his horizons and took his mind off thoughts of food.

Other personal preferences expressed by the star chef in this interview include Singapore — a location Kerridge says ‘seduced’ him with its uniqueness and provided him with one of his best holiday meals — the Soho Hotel in London (for accommodation), Cornwall and Kent (when staying in the British Isles), and the drive from Cape Town to Hermanus, in South Africa. The gourmet cook also revealed that India and Japan are the next destinations on his travel bucket list — and possibly another holiday to Venice.
