17, December 2014: Tuscany may be a popular summer holiday destination, but experts reiterate it is also a fantastic place to visit at any other time of year, including in the middle of winter. Anyone planning book villas in Tuscany in the winter will not only be able to enjoy the beauty of the region and the lack of other tourists, but they can also enjoy a number of upcoming cultural events taking place in January.

Befanate Befanotti

Some of the smallest festivals in Italy can be the most interesting, and this is true of the Befanate Befanotti festival. Taking place on January 5th, in the town of Piancastagnaio and spilling out to the surrounding villages, it is one of the more unusual festivals of Tuscany.

Anyone staying in villas in Tuscany either in the town or nearby can enjoy the spectacle of the local men of the town dressing up like beggars and going from house to house offering a begging song. In return for their song they are given money and food, and they then meet up in the main square at the end to share out the proceeds of their night’s work and enjoy a meal.

The Feast of the Epiphany

The Feast of the Epiphany is an important event all over Italy, and anyone staying in villas in Tuscany can enjoy taking part if they’re visiting around January 6th. The day is celebrated all over the region, but one of the best places to go is Radicofani. Here there will be a re-enactment of the arrival of the Three Wise Men followed by a meal.

San Gimignano

On January 31st, a festival of good fortune will be held in the lovely Tuscan town of San Gimignano. Taking place in Piazza della Cistern and Piazza del Duomo, a candlelit procession is held through the streets leading up to the Duomo. This event is to ensure continued good fortune for the people of the town for the coming year.
