A medical expert shared on his blog the relationship between exercise and maintaining ketone levels. In his post, Peter Attia wrote about his experiences doing swim workouts, long rides and high intensity training to achieve the right ketone levels.

“I embarked on a self-experiment last weekend to see if I could better understand the interplay between the different types of exercise I do and ketone production -- beta-hydroxybutyrate, or B-OHB, to be specific,” Attia wrote on his website. “My point is, even a self-experiment of one can be good for something.”

First day: swim workouts

On his first day, Attia said he did a one-hour and 45-minute swim including a warm up and a cool down. The primary set consisted of freestyle and butterfly for various distances and rests in between. Then, he measured his lactate and glucose levels.

Sunday: long ride

Attia shared that this Sunday workout, meanwhile was a tempo ride on 104 miles with 5,600 feet of climbing slopes. He did the workout for 17 mph with headwinds around.

“My average HR over this 6 hour ride was 141 and average power output was between 190 and 200 watts. There were many sections of the ride, particularly on the climbs, where my HR was sustained in the 160’s for 30 minute stretches and power output was above 275 watts,” he wrote.

Among the food items he consumed during the workout are nuts, cashews, almonds, eggs fluffed with heavy cream, and more others.

Third day: high intensity training

Attia’s workout on the third day was a high intensity training on dry land. High intensity training has been used to build muscle and burn fats.

This medical expert said he learned a lot during the training, especially on the relationship of ketones and exercise.

“The metabolic advantages of nutritional ketosis seemed most apparent during my bike ride, evidenced by my ability to access internal fat stores across a much broader range of physiologic stress than a non-ketotic individual,” he wrote as one of the lessons he learned.
