Orlando, FL— September 7, 2015 — Diabetes is a medical condition that is affecting an increasing number of people nowadays. There are many undesirable consequences of having diabetes, and one is that it can potentially cause nerve damage. The good news is that there is a therapeutic ingredient that can potentially be helpful to diabetics.

Omega-3 fatty acids are believed to be helpful for restoring nerve damage caused by diabetes. According to research, approximately 50 percent of individuals with diabetes suffer from neuropathy, or nerve damage. There has not been any cure yet, but it can be managed. Sufferers only need to keep their blood sugar in control to slow neuropathy.

The Journal of Neurophysiology published a new study that introduces a new and effective alternative, and it involves the use of omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil. According to the animal-based study using mice, fish oil supplements can potentially help restore the healthy condition of the nerves destroyed by diabetes.

The study’s lead investigator from the VA Medical Center in Iowa City, Mark Yorek, states that diabetes causes a debilitating and very costly complication, which is diabetic neuropathy. This complication is even considered to be the leading cause of nontrauma-related amputations and foot ulcers. What makes it even more disadvantageous is its immeasurably negative impact not only on the sufferers, but also their families.

According to Yorek, using fish oil can be very helpful because supplements are believed to be safe to consume on a daily basis. Taking it is also as easy as consuming a vitamin. Individuals who do not want to obtain omega-3 fats by consuming fish oil may take advantage of fish oil supplements.

Previous studies about diabetes and obesity found that omega-3 fats helped to achieve better blood sugar levels, reduce inflammation and maintain regular liver function. The medicinal values of omega-3s were attributed to a type of omega-3 fatty acids called resolvins.

It has been previously observed by the research group that diets rich with omega-3 fats from fish oil were associated with an improvement in diabetic neuropathy in rats suffering from Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Diabetic mice were given a high-fat diet, in which 50 percent of fat came from fish oil, and daily injections of resolvin. The results of the study were compared to mice that are non-diabetic and healthy. It was found that the group that received treatment experienced an improvement in nerve health, and that resolvin had stimulated the growth of nerve cells.

Fish oil supplements can be bought at local grocery or health stores or online. Consumers just need to choose a product that comes from a reputable herbal company (www.amazon.com/Omega-Fish-Oil-Supplement-Softgels/dp/B00O8NS20K).
