Orlando, FL — December 4, 2015 — Radiation therapy is often administered to cancer patients. While this treatment option has been found to be helpful, it causes unavoidable side effects. Fortunately, there is a natural remedy believed to fight these side effects.

Researchers investigate the radiation-protective abilities of turmeric. Among the side effects of the therapy is red, blistered, peeling, skin. Radiation dermatitis often affects the neck, underarms, chest. It is believed that antioxidants can potentially help eliminate these side effects.

“Turmeric contains therapeutic ingredients such as antioxidants,” said Divine Bounty spokesperson, Melissa Scott.

Turmeric has been used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. It has a powerful healing phytochemical called curcumin, which contains anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties, among others.

The Radiation Research published a pilot study found revealed curcumin could protect women from this skin problem. According to the research, only 29 percent of the 14 participants with breast cancer, who took 6 grams of curcumin on a daily basis, experienced peeling, blistered skin.

On the other hand, 88 percent of the participants who belonged to the supplement-free group suffered from the side effects of radiation therapy.

Oncologists often do not recommend the use of antioxidants to cancer patients. This is because they can defend not the healthy cells but also the malignant ones from the effects of radiation. The good news is the antioxidants as well as the anti-inflammatories in curcumin could potentially benefit the healthy, beneficial cells without aiding the cancerous type.

Julie Ryan, PhD, MPH, study author and assistant professor of dermatology and radiation oncology at the Univeristy of Rochester Medical Center, reveals that they conducted other studies first to ensure that curcumin wouldn’t protect the tumor from radiation.

Dr. Ryan and the others are open to the possibility of using curcumin in topical creams or ointments. Curcumin can potentially offer a range of therapeutic benefits. However, it has low bioavailability, and this limits its absorption inside the body. It is low bioavailable, and this means it gets sapped in the gastrointestinal tract even before it reaches the bloodstream.

Nowadays, it is not difficult to find curcumin supplements at natural food stores or online. Experts recommend that consumers should take time in researching and looking for the best ones available. There are many supplements available, and most of the best ones contain BioPerine.

BioPerine is a black pepper extract believed to help increase the delivery of curcumin’s nutrients inside the body. Experts recommend the use of curcumin supplements with BioPerine to achieve maximum results (http://amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-BioPerine-Pepper-Extract/dp/B00VSVKJ8I/).
