Orlando, FL — June 12, 2015 — Women are often more susceptible to autoimmune forms of arthritis, such as fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and brittle-bone disease osteoporosis. Most of all, they are believed to be more likely to suffer from debilitating musculoskeletal disease such as osteoarthritis.

Researchers investigated how gender affects osteoarthritis diagnosis and treatment. Although it has not been validated yet why women are more susceptible or severely affected than men, scientists believe that certain factors are involved.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, osteoarthritis in the hand, hip, knee and foot is more prevalent in women than in men. It was also revealed that women who suffer from osteoarthritis often suffer more than men.

The Biology of Sex Differences published a study in 2011 that found women who suffered from osteoarthritis experienced significantly worse pain as well as impaired function than men. According to health experts, it can be that factors such as hormones make women more susceptible to the condition. It can also be due to the anatomic differences in women, such as having weaker quadriceps muscles, which offers less support in the knees for women.

“There are other factors such as the differences in the joint structure, the thickness of articular cartilage and the differences in gait patterns, which are believed to place different stresses on the knees of women,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.

Mary O’Connor, M.D., Mayo Clinic orthopaedic surgeon, conducted a study with her colleagues. The study was supported by the Society for Women’s Health Research and focused on the patients of Dr. O’Connor who underwent knee replacement surgery. They believed that the study would be helpful in opening the path to determining whether treatments to prevent osteoarthritis, or the progression of the condition, should be sex based.

Studies also showed that women are more likely to resort to complementary and alternative therapies, such as mind-body treatments, along with conventional treatments. For many arthritis patients, male or female, using natural alternatives is also a great way to achieve pain relief in addition to drugs such as NSAIDS. There are many sufferers who use glucosamine supplements as these products have long been believed to not just provide pain relief, but also improve the mobility of patients.

Just like medicines, natural alternatives such as glucosamine, may have varying effects on sufferers. However, many of those who use it claimed that it has been nothing but helpful in their struggle to achieve relief from pain. They also added that the best glucosamine products are those that contain chondroitin, MSM and turmeric (www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
