Orlando, FL - September 08, 2016 - There are many people who suffer from knee cartilage damage. There are many factors believed to contribute to its development and there are also ways that are thought to be helpful in reducing the risk of this condition.

Researchers recommend weight loss to reduce knee cartilage damage. The general population has long been advised by experts to maintain a healthy weight. There are many ways to stay fit and lose extra pounds.

A recent study reveals that losing extra weight may have the potential to slow down knee cartilage loss in obese individuals. Obesity is a big risk factor of arthritic conditions, such as knee osteoarthritis.

Joint replacement surgery is one of the options that individuals with this degenerative joint disease often resort to.

In a study, 500 obese and overweight Americans with mild to moderate osteoarthritis were reviewed. There were also participants who simply had risk factors of the condition.

There were three groups in which the participants were randomly assigned: a group with little weight loss, a no-weight-loss control group, and group with 10% loss of their body weight.

For four years, the researchers tried to monitor the condition of the participants. At the end of the study, it was found that a loss in weight significantly helped protect the cartilage from degeneration.

According to researchers, the greater the weight loss amount, the higher the cartilage protection. The study was presented at the annual meeting at the Radiological Society of North America in Chicago.

The study author, Dr. Alexandra Gersing, reveals that there was a significant decrease in cartilage degeneration for individuals who lost more than 10% of their body weight. The improvements were extremely noticeable at the weight-bearing areas of the knees.

Dr. Gersing is from the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco.

Today, individuals with arthritis often turn to medications, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), for pain relief. While these medications may temporarily provide relief, they may also cause side effects.

The good news is that there are certain natural alternatives believed to be safer than certain medications, such as ashwagandha. This Indian herb is believed to have strong anti-inflammatory properties that may help to combat inflammation.

Ashwagandha is also believed to be an effective joint pain reliever. This natural alternative may not just be an ideal method for arthritis, but also other conditions. It has long been used as a natural medicine due to its potential to help fight a myriad of medical conditions.
