Orlando, FL— July 14, 2015 — Knee osteoarthritis is one of the most prevalent arthritic conditions today. There are sufferers who experience severe pain, swelling, stiffness and other symptoms as their condition worsens. The good news is that there is a way that people with knee osteoarthritis can know whether or not the condition has already reached its advanced stage.

Scientists reveal that the IL-1Ra gene may potentially help predict osteoarthritis progression. This genetic clue is believed to be a great indicator in determining which osteoarthritis sufferer is likely to experience progression. The study conducted by the scientists was presented at the 2010 World Congress on Osteoarthritis in Belgium.

The study used the data from the Johnston Country Osteoarthritis project, which involved 1,154 participants who were monitored for 11 years. It aimed at knowing when exactly they started suffering from the condition and how quickly it progressed. At the start of the study, the scientists already conducted genetic tests on the participants.

After analyzing the tests, they found that there were nine genes linked with the progression of osteoarthritis. More specifically, it was revealed that the strongest association involved the IL-1Ra gene. According to the scientists, the genetic factors almost doubled the risk that a sufferer’s osteoarthritis would advance to a severe stage.

Lead author and the director of the University of North Carolina’s Thurston Arthritis Research Center, Joanne M. Jordan, M.D., states that the genetic polymorphisms have been found to be associated with both the development and progression of knee osteoarthritis over time. These genetic polymorphisms were formerly found to be cross-sectionally linked with more advanced knee osteoarthritis.

While they were able to identify the link between disease progression and the specific genetic variations, they nonetheless could not explain why that happened. According to Dr. Jordan, it may be due to the manner that molecules fit, fold or line up in their receptors, which causes enzymes to behave differently than expected. She also added that the findings of the study could potentially help identify high-risk individuals in advance before they get osteoarthritis or before it progresses.

More studies are still underway to determine the ways to detect osteoarthritis progression ahead of time. While studies continue to multiply in number, there are sufferers who take measures in their attempt to improve their overall condition. There are individuals who rely on NSAIDs to achieve pain relief, and there are also those who use natural alternatives, such as glucosamine supplements. This particular alternative is believed to help reduce pain and improve the mobility of sufferers (http://amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
