Geneva’s 36th Festival International de Ballons, scheduled in the last week of January through the first few days of February 2014 in Chateau-d’Oex, is among the most anticipated events in the city. It will delight those weary tourists coming in from completing their Geneva airport transfers.

A festival of colour and fun

The annual festival draws large crowds of visitors from around the world, thanks to its family-friendly programme, exciting events, and spectacular sights.

Aerostiers from around 20 countries are set to participate in this year’s festival, and guests can expect to enjoy watching as many as a hundred hot air balloons of all shapes and sizes take flight over the breath-taking landscape of the Alps.

As seen from the ground, the hot air balloons are indeed ‘strange flying objects’ whose colours and textures inspire awe and joy—especially for children. While most aerostiers aim for a professional, sleek look with their hot-air balloons, there are those who aim to entertain with their quirkily shaped hot-air-powered aircrafts: a large duckling floating into the blue sky, for example, or a space robot, or a blown-up rooster.

In any case, judging from this year’s programme, there is something for everybody—even those arriving in on their Geneva airport transfers will be able to take advantage of the fun from inside the shuttle. And that’s only for starters: the air show (during which a skilled hang glider, with a smoke trail, weaves in and out of the lumbering balloons) is a must-see, not to mention the main event: the hot air balloon competition.

Founded by legendary aerostier Hans Bucker and Charles-Andre Ramseier more than thirty years ago, the International Hot Air Balloon Festival has since attracted and entertained countless visitors. Many book their Geneva airport transfers months in advance simply to attend the festival. This year’s event is expected to attract a record number of visitors, thanks to the much-anticipated ‘son et lumiere’ night show and a meticulously planned line-up of activities for the whole family.
