Orlando, FL — May 10, 2016 — Arthritic conditions, such as osteoarthritis, are highly prevalent among individuals who belong to the elderly population. However, it seems that this condition is not only for the aging individuals, but also those who engage in intense physical activities.
Elite athletes are more susceptible to arthritis. These athletes are those who engage in high-contact sports such as rugby, soccer, and football. They are believed to be at a higher risk of knee and hip arthritis later in life than males who exercise a little or not at all.
According to statistics, 30 percent of athletes had knee or hip arthritis, compared to 19 percent on individuals who were not athletes.
Dr. Joseph Buckwalter who studies osteoarthritis and sports medicine at the University of Iowa, states that regular exercise is essential to overall health and well-being. However, there are certain types of exercise that exposes one to greater risk of injury.
Dr. Buckwalter added that elite athletes engage in physically demanding, challenging sports. This makes them more susceptible to repetitive joint injuries. Osteoarthritis is otherwise known as the wear and tear arthritis.
It develops when the cartilage that cushions the joints wear down. This results in friction between bones, which also leads to swelling, pain, and limited range of motion.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 27 million individuals in the United States had osteoarthritis.
A study was published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine. It involved 700 retired Swedish retired athletes between the ages 50 and 93 years old. The participants of the study played professional and Olympic level sports.
Nearly 1,400 men who were in the same age range exercised a little or not at all. It was found that elite athletes were more susceptible to hip or knee arthritis by 85 percent. In athletes who had joint surgery, the risk was doubled.
The increased risk was associated with high contact sports such as handball and soccer as well as in ice hockey players.
Individuals who want to be in great shape may engage in activities that do not put them at risk of injury. Some of these activities are cycling, moderate running, swimming, and yoga.
There are former athletes who use natural remedies such as glucosamine supplements. Glucosamine is thought to help repair joint cartilage and improve overall joint health. Glucosamine is also a natural ingredient, and its use is not associated with side effects.
Some of the best glucosamine supplements contain a natural, therapeutic ingredient called methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) (amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Supplement-2000mg-serving/dp/B0126ZF0B0).
