Orlando, FL— November 13, 2015 — Edema develops when the fluid retention in spaces between body cells or the circulatory system is abnormal. While there are medications used by sufferers, a natural alternative is becoming more and more popular as a remedy for fighting the condition.

A study reveals the therapeutic benefits of curcumin on Edema. While anyone can get it, it is pregnant women who are prone to the condition. Edema is just a symptom, and when it becomes persistent, it can lead to more serious health problems.

When this condition develops, it can result in swelling in the feet, legs, and ankles. The symptoms are usually accompanied by muscle pain, shortness of breath, abdominal bloating, facial puffiness, or a change in mental state. There are other known causes of edema such as sitting or standing for a long duration, allergies, hormonal changes, head injury, hypertension, or exposure to extreme heat.

When high altitude cerebral edema happens to mountain climbers, it could be fatal. There is a variety of treatments for the condition such as surgery, drug therapies, lifestyle changes, massages, or alternative therapies. The use of natural supplements such as curcumin is also widely practiced.

Turmeric contains curcumin, which is a phytochemical that contains anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. Edema can result in inflammation in the body. According to experts, curcumin can act as an anti-inflammatory agent, and is even more effective than anti-inflammatory drugs. What makes it even more beneficial is that its use is not associated with side effects.

In a study, the researchers aimed at determining the role of curcumin in oxidative stress and inflammation caused by cerebral edema. They simulated the altitudes of 25,000 feet, and exposed rates to different durations.  They examined the transvascular leakage, oxidative stress, and pro-inflammatory parameters also at different durations.

It was found that rats that were pre-treated with curcumin and exposed to hypoxic exposure for 24 hours experienced the highest transvascular leakage of the brain. The rats also experienced an increase in the pro-inflammatory cytokines. The pre-treatment was believed to help significantly ease the cerebral transvascular leakage symptoms caused by hypoxia.

There have been studies conducted to see the therapeutic effects of curcumin. Today, curcumin supplements are widely used by many people, especially individuals who are suffering from certain conditions. Curcumin supplements with a bioavailability enhancing ingredient such as BioPerine are widely popular. BioPerine is a black pepper extract that is believed to have the ability to increase curcumin absorption inside the body (http://amazon.com/Turmeric-Curcumin-Complex-BioPerine-Bio-availability/dp/B00JA4TLTI).
