Orlando, FL — May 6, 2015 — A surgery is one of the major treatment options that many arthritis patients resort to. However, their struggle doesn’t end after getting a procedure. As a matter of fact, recovery is often a long process, especially for those who do not know exactly how to deal with it.

The Arthritis Foundation has provided some guidelines on what to expect after surgery. Recovery actually starts before patients leave the hospital. Doctors often require patients to achieve some milestones before they are considered fit to go home.

“Arthritis patients who just had a surgery should be able to walk with a walker, get in and out of bed, climb a few stairs and do recovery exercises,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.

According to experts, the hospital stay of patients may vary according to the surgery and their own circumstances. However, those who had total knee replacement are typically made to stay for around three to seven days and up to ten days.

It is imperative that patients are able to move their joints soon after their surgery as this can help them regain their strength and heal. Healthcare providers often use a CPM, or Continuous Passive Motion Machine, to help patients regain the movement of their legs.

A CPM is a device that is designed to carefully move the limb for patients. It gently bends and straightens the leg, and a physical therapist of nurse will take care of setting the machine to move a specified speed and amount. It keeps the leg elevated and this aids in circulation and reduction of swelling.

“A physical therapist will also help patients do their recovery exercises after the CPM. Exercises include rotating and pumping the ankles to allow blood to move through the legs. There are other exercises, such as moving the hip or knee to regain strength,” added O’Sullivan.

During the pre-surgery planning, patients will be consulted on whether the hospital will arrange the equipment, such as the walker, or if they have to make the arrangement themselves. They are also made to determine the type of equipment that is covered by their insurance policy. When the healthcare provider has determined that the patient is free of infection ad complications, he or she will be permitted to go.

At home, patients can fully recover and take some steps to regain their strength. They will have the freedom to do things that are beneficial for their health. Using natural alternatives, such as glucosamine supplements, is believed to be helpful for individuals who suffer from arthritis, and who want to regain their joint health (www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
