Orlando, FL — June 18, 2015 — Sugary sodas are one of the most popular beverages in the world. However, consumption of it is also associated with the development of a wide variety of medical conditions.

The Arthritis Foundation has provided some information about the link between consumption of sugary sodas and rheumatoid arthritis. Since sugar-sweetened beverages are widely consumed nowadays, it is important to let everyone learn about the risk that’s carried along with drinking them.

Recently, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study that revealed women who consume one or more sugar-sweetened sodas on a daily basis are more likely to suffer from rheumatoid arthritis compared to individuals who drink less than one soda. It also showed that the risk was higher among older women.

“Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation and results in joint pain and damage. In addition to genetic and environmental factors, diet is also considered to be one of the main culprits of the disease,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.

Yang Hu, the lead author of the study, and his colleagues from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, followed about 190,000 women who were enrolled in the two large studies of nurses, namely Nurses’ Health Study and NHS II. They analyzed data involving the diet of the women from 1980 to 2008 and 1991 to 2009.

It was found that women who drank two or more sugar-sweetened sodas on a daily basis were 63 percent more susceptible to developing rheumatoid arthritis than those who drank less than one sweetened beverage a month. The increased risk only became noticeable in women who developed seropositive rheumatoid arthritis, which indicates more-severe disease.

It was also shown in the study that women who consumed more soda tended to engage in physical activities less and have poorer diets. Older women were also more susceptible to RA than younger women.

Researchers suspected that it happened because it could actually take years for the chronic inflammation caused by the soda to cause RA symptoms. However, it is also important to note that drinking skim milk as a substitute for soda was found to be helpful in reducing the risk, and this was possibly due to the therapeutic benefits of vitamin D.

According to Dr. Hu, it would be helpful for individuals, who suffer from early symptoms or are genetically predisposed to rheumatoid arthritis, to reduce their consumption of sugar-sweetened soda. There are good alternatives such as plain water, diet soda and skim milk.

One of the best natural remedies that is believed to be helpful among rheumatoid arthritis sufferers is known as the glucosamine supplement. Many individuals with RA reported some significant improvements after using the natural alternative (http://www.amazon.com/Glucosamine-Sulfate-Chondroitin-Supplement-Turmeric/dp/B00DUMO9X4).
