A recently opened exhibition focusing on celebrity bridal gowns, hosted at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, could provide a source of inspiration for London wedding dress designers looking for new ideas in their field.

The display, which opened early last month and will be at the V&A until March of next year, features a number of wedding gowns worn by celebrity brides over the years. Standing out for not only their beauty but also their innovative designs and bold stylistic choices, these pieces could therefore help inspire London wedding dress designers to become more creative in their own work.

Among the eighty or so pieces that make up this exhibition, visitors will find pieces worn by such prominent entertainment industry names as Gwen Stefani, Kate Moss and Dita Von Teese. All of these celebrities opted to tie the knot in dresses that either revolutionised or perfectly symbolised a moment in time for wedding dress design, justifying the inclusion of their gowns in this new showcase of bridal couture.

Stefani’s and Von Teese’s dresses, in particular, stand out for their bold choice of colour. Rather than settle for the usual creams and whites traditionally associated with bridal wear, both these celebrities opted for striking bright colours, with Stefani tying the knot in reddish hues and Von Teese opting for an instantly eye-catching shade of purple. Both of these colours are on trend and could potentially inspire up-and-coming London wedding dress designers in search of ideas.

Celebrity dresses are not, however, this exhibition’s sole motive of interest. The display also includes a number of historic gowns that offer a perfect overview of the evolution of bridal couture over the past four centuries – from 18th century court dresses to more recent designer creations by prominent names such as Vera Wang and Jenny Packham.

The ‘Wedding Dresses 1755-2014′ exhibition will be open to the public until March 15, 2015.
