Master David McCloskey started embracing the ideals of Tae Kwon-Do as a student in 1977, learning under grandmasters Young Il Kong and Young Bo Kong. Today he continues his dedication to students of the Young Brothers Tae Kwon-Do martial arts association that his former instructors founded.

McCloskey, who has taught in the Houston area since the early 1980s, nears his fifth year as master instructor at Young Brothers’ Cypress location. He is known for his high expectations as well as his caring and nurturing personality.

Both adult and child students benefit from his vast knowledge of martial arts. McCloskey attained the rank of seventh-degree black belt during his more than 35 years studying Tae Kwon-Do. He also holds a first-degree black belt in Shotokan Karate and has taught Krav Maga and Filipino Eskrima. Certified as a martial arts specialist through the American Council of Martial Arts, he has been trained in Brazilian Jujitsu and Tai Chi.

McCloskey’s training began under the Young brothers at a Pittsburgh, Pa. dojang in 1977. Young Il Kong is one of the twelve original masters of the Korea Taekwondo Association who traveled to 127 countries in the 1960s to introduce the world to Tae Kwon-Do. McCloskey and other higher-ranking students who trained under Young Il Kong and Young Bo Kong spread throughout the United States to open their own schools.

McCloskey shares the same passion for Tae Kwon-Do as his former instructors. He strives to instill the same self-discipline and strength of character in his students that they did in him. Each of his classes is taught with a purpose, to encourage students to follow the tenets of the martial art with the same professionalism and tradition as he does.

His students learn not only the martial art but also integrity, perseverance and courtesy. They are taught to have an indomitable spirit, a trait that will benefit them in life as well as in the sport. Parents of his students give Young Brothers Tae Kwon-Do high reviews.

“My shy daughter started with him at the age of six,” said one parent who left a five-star review. “She received her black belt a couple of years back but the life lessons he taught her throughout her journey has helped her be a more confident young lady. If you would like your child to be motivated, have discipline and be respectful while learning Tae Kwon-Do, I would highly recommend to give Master McCloskey a chance.”
