Traditional, non-organic mattresses are manufactured from chemicals that can cause harm to those who sleep on them, and then are bathed in harmful chemicals to reach new national fire retardant standards. Non-organic mattress components contain petroleum based polyurethane foams, pesticides, synthetic fibers, VOCs, herbicides, fungicides, artificial dyes and adhesives. Tempur Pedic memory foam, as well as other traditional memory foam products, may off-gas as much as 64 VOCs (volatile organic compounds). On top of this, non-organic mattresses now meet flame retardant standards (since 2007) through the use of toxic chemicals, such as formaldehyde, PBDE’s, antimony trioxide and more). These can be toxic, and may also contain carcinogens.
