Resveratrol Has the Potential to Help People Battling with Depression

Orlando, FL — September 16, 2016 -  Depression is an ailment that does not just reduce the quality of life of sufferers, but could even push them to succumb to suicide. There are many alternatives believed to be helpful to sufferers, and one is the use of antioxidants.

Resveratrol has the potential to help people battling with depression. In the last few years, inflammatory depression has become known to cause the condition. While there are several risk factors of this psychological ailment, it is believed that the use of inflammation-causing medications could trigger its development.

In a new study, it was found that resveratrol may be a natural anti-inflammatory agent that does not just have the potential to prevent inflammation but could also fight depression-related behaviors. These promising benefits of resveratrol were seen in rodents exposed to social stress.

Susan K. Wood, Ph.D., Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and leader of the research team, states that the research they conducted is quite important in today’s society.

This study investigates the potentially effective alternatives for individuals who are more at risk of depression as well as related disorders caused by social stress. She hopes that the findings of the study they conducted will inspire scientists to determine the effects of natural anti-inflammatory alternatives on depression.

Researchers from past studies created an animal model to mimic the type of social stress usually associated with bullying and depression. In the study, there was a larger and more aggressive rat that played the role of a “bully”.

The researchers found that the rats exposed to the aggressors experienced inflammation as well as depression-like behaviors. On the other hand, the rats that did not exhibit depression-like behaviors had no inflammation.

In this study, the bullied rats were dosed with resveratrol on a daily basis. The daily dose was equivalent to amounts of resveratrol found in six glasses of wine. It was found that the potential antioxidant had hindered the increase of inflammation in the brain.  The researchers also revealed that resveratrol appeared to prevent depression-like behaviors in the subjects that were bound to develop the behaviors.

Julie Finnell suggests that resveratrol has the potential to reduce or even eliminate inflammation throughout the body. Finnell is a doctoral student on the research team who will present the findings at the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) Annual Meeting during Experimental Biology 2015.

Resveratrol may be easily, conveniently, and effectively consumed through supplementation. The more notable resveratrol supplements contain grape seed, green tea, red wine, and Acai fruit extracts.
