Super efficient lungs based on 132 Climaveneta air handling units for the “Blessed Teresa of Calcutta” Hospital in Padua.

hall, South Padua United Hospitals, Este - Monselice, Aymeric ZublenaBassano del Grappa January 2016: The complex of new South Padua United Hospitals is located in the middle of a large green area in Monselice and has a horizontal surface with three factory units for a total of 75,000 m2 of gross floor space. The buildings are no higher than three floors plus two technical levels. The profile of the undulating roofing recalls the landscape of the surrounding hills and allows the complex to fit harmoniously into the context in which it stands.

South Padua United Hospitals Este - Monselice, Aymeric ZublenaThe topic of energy efficiency was vital from the beginning, in the first stages of the hospital design. The energy analysis that was carried out led to the choice of a tri-generation system based on 2 802 kWe engines and a 1900 kWf absorber. The advantages of a tri-generation system are the reduction of energy consumption and related emissions, the tax exemption for the purchase of natural gas and obtaining Energy Efficiency Certificates (EEC) with their consequent economic value.

To further increase the energy efficiency of the hospital, the tri-generation system has been supported by a geothermal field, consisting of 1,300 closed loop vertical probes. The probes are linked to 3 NECS-WN / B Climaveneta heat pumps, placed in plant rooms and directly connected to the collectors of secondary distribution. The geothermal field in winter produces hot water at 45 ° C (total capacity of 450 kW; COP 4.5), while in summer it produces chilled water at 7 ° C (500 kW EER 5.0).

DSCN0254Gemmo Spa, the company in charge of the M&E systems of the hospital, has chosen Climaveneta as supplier of the AHU. As a matter of fact even the air treatment system has been chosen for its high efficiency and is based on 132 WIZARD air handling units by Climaveneta for a total air flow of more than 900,000 m³ / h. All the components of the WIZARD units have been designed and carefully selected to meet the most stringent requirements of cleanliness and hygiene, typically required by hospitals, while ensuring maximum comfort and low noise levels in the rooms.

Cristiano Dal Seno, AHU Development Manager at Climaveneta says “The AHU Climaveneta produces are fully equipped with all the components required to always grant an optimal air filtration, humidification and heat recovery, in line with the Blessed Teresa of Calcutta hospital approach to sustainability. Granting the highest level of comfort in every project, in a green way, has been the Climaveneta mission for 45 years”.

At the Blessed Teresa of Calcutta hospital they have also installed 9 additional heat pumps for the active thermodynamic recovery in combination with the static heat recovery. Going in depth the plant designer has selected 8 NECS-WN / B and 1 RECS-W / B 2152 all supplied by Climaveneta for a total thermal capacity of 2.3 MW. This system combines a high quality standard while avoiding any air flow contamination and is able to supply almost constant power, both in heating and cooling mode, even in the case of outside temperature changes.

Moreover, the use of polyurethane prefabricated panel ducts brings significant advantages, including substantial noise reduction and above all a significant reduction in air loss and then of the treated air flow with a meaningful reduction in energy consumption.

Thanks to all these measures and to an integrated design of the building and systems, the total energy request of the hospital is 27% less than another equivalent hospital, compliant with legal standards. It is the result of an extensive experience and of an approach that, from a methodological point of view, could be favourably replicated in many situations.

Francesco Ortolani, General Manager of Gemmo SpA says :”We are proud of the great job we did at the Blessed Teresa of Calcutta hospital where, even thanks to the cooperation with partners such as Climaveneta, we have been able to create M&E systems able to combine reliability, innovation and energy efficiency”.

At the new United Hospitals in South Padua great importance has been given to earthquake safety. Hospitals are in fact called to play a very important relief role for the population in the case of disasters, as they must be able to ensure the first emergency medical operations. This implies paying special attention not only to the building’s structure but also to its plants that must be able to handle emergencies.

Even Climaveneta consequently verified the earthquake resistance of its units by installing special seismic dampers to the heat pumps, able to absorb the vibrations in the case of an earthquake and by subjecting the AHU to a careful structural analysis.

Reliability, energy efficiency and low noise emissions are the main factors that have always identified Climaveneta units and that have been essential in the construction of a modern hospital like the “Blessed Teresa of Calcutta” in Padua.
